2014:  A Year of Heritage Projects at the CPL

In keeping with the countdown to the 135th birthday celebration at the Colby Public Library, community members are encouraged to participate in the monthly heritage events and vintage crafting opportunities offered.

January:  Calling all quilters for our “Quilt in a Bag” project.   Sew a 10” by 10” quilt square representing a book from our assortment.  It will be packaged with the book for children to check out.  35 books are available to choose from for beginning and experienced stitchers.  Return finished block by January 31.

February:  Quilt Bag Punch Card Program begins.  Punch cards will be available for youth when they check out “Quilt in a Bag” books.   A card with 10 punches is eligible to be in a drawing for quilt prizes in April.  Also in February will be the “Movies, Music, and Software Sale” running February 1-28.

March:  Join in our heirloom seed swap.  Take home a packet of seeds to grow vintage vegetables.   The Friends of the CPL group will be hosting the annual meeting along with a speaker.  A special craft and hobby day will be held in memory of former CPL volunteer Maddie Thums on March 21.  A list of projects to benefit St. Joseph’s Hospital is available to work on that day or at home now.  Everything will be collected and donated to the hospital in Maddie’s honor.

April:  All aboard as the CPL will be joining with the local Rural Arts Museum for a look at railroad history in the Colby area.  “Quilt in a Bag” punch card drawing for children to win child-sized quilts will be held.  Also, the annual Colby Lion’s Smelt Feed will be April 23, with servers supplied by the CPL.

May:  Book club outings are planned for Stoney Acres, a third generation farm and eatery in rural Athens.

June & July:  Calling all crocheters for the Coral Reef Project.  Instructions will be available to crochet pieces of a coral reef to go along with our summer reading program.  Also, the annual Cheese Days Book Sale will be July 17-19.

August:  Totes for Tykes Collection & Tote Bag Craft-a-thon will aid young patients and families as they wait in hospital waiting rooms—donate to our 2014 service project anytime through the end of August.  Friends of the CPL Bake Sale will feature time-tested recipes.

September:  Knit up a Storm challenge to all knitters begins.  Can we cover the railings to the entrance of the library with samples of knitting?

October:  Got Apples?  A BAKE-OFF featuring apple recipes will be hosted.  Then, an apple treats and ice cream social will be the next evening.

November:   A weaving display and demo will be given Craft and Hobby night by Karen Thell.  Throughout the month, patrons will have a chance to enter a drawing for a rag rug or rag rug tote.   Thanksgiving placemats will be crafted for the community Thanksgiving dinner.

December:  All are invited to the CPL Birthday Party on December 9.  All ages may enter the “Write a CPL Birthday Ode” contest.  View library memorabilia and artifacts.  Enjoy tasty old-fashioned treats and beverages.

2014 is a great year to join in the educational fun at the Colby Public Library.  There are plenty of opportunities for quilters, knitters, bakers, crocheters, gardeners, history buffs, weavers, and readers to be involved in this year of heritage projects.  Stop in the library for informational brochures or call the CPL at 715-223-2000 for more information on any of the programs.
